THE NEXT DAY, Rebecca was in the barn feeding the horses when Shelby walked in. She kept her back to Shelby while she did her chores, unable or unwilling to meet Shelby’s gaze.

“Good morning,” Shelby greeted, trying to sound cheerful. She didn’t know why Rebecca continued to avoid her, but she was determined to find out. They couldn’t go on the way they were for much longer.

“Morning.” Rebecca didn’t stop, but in fact made it a point to continue her work, edging by Shelby.

Shelby leaned against one of the stalls and crossed her arms over her chest. “Doesn’t that tire you out?”

“What?”

“Going out of your way to ignore me,” Shelby accused.

Rebecca stopped what she was doing for a moment and finally met her eyes. “I’m not. It’s just that I’ve got a lot of things I need to get finished around here before I go to work, and I’m running behind.”

Checking her watch, Shelby knew the lie for what it was. Normally Rebecca didn’t have to leave for another fifteen minutes or so, and she hadn’t seemed to have been in any hurry before Shelby walked into the barn. “What’s going on with you, Rebecca?”

“Nothing.” Rebecca stood in front of Patches stall and rubbed the pony’s nose, purposely not looking in Shelby’s direction.

“Bullshit.” Shelby pushed off where she had been standing, and marched over to Rebecca. She grasped her by the shoulders. “What have I done to deserve this kind of treatment from you? I thought we lo--” she paused, taking a deep breath. “I thought we were getting along pretty well.” Shelby’s heart beat frantically in her chest over her near declaration of love.

“We are.” Slipping from the other woman’s hold, Rebecca ducked underneath Shelby’s arms and stepped away. “I’ve got to go.”

Shelby watched her leave, feeling a heavy weight in her chest.
